TITANIUM ALLOYS

Titanium and titanium alloys offer high strength despite having roughly half the density of steel. The titanium oxide layer that forms spontaneously on the surface gives outstanding corrosion resistance across a very wide range, including seawater and chloride-bearing environments.‌‌

The commercially pure grades (Grade 1, 2 and 4) have an alpha structure: as purity rises formability increases, and as the oxygen and iron contents rise strength increases. Grade 5 (Ti6Al4V) is an alpha-beta alloy containing aluminium and vanadium and is the most widely used titanium alloy in the world. The ELI quality is a special Grade 5 derivative with reduced interstitial element content, produced for applications requiring cryogenic toughness and biocompatibility.

Because of its low thermal conductivity, titanium calls for low cutting speeds and generous cooling in machining, and welding must be carried out under shielding gas. Material is supplied with certification to the aerospace, defence, marine, chemical and medical sectors.‌‌

Choosing a grade. Where formability and corrosion resistance matter more than strength, Ti Grade 1 is the choice; for general purpose use, Ti Grade 2 balances strength and machinability. The highest strength among the commercially pure grades is obtained with Ti Grade 4. For structural and load-bearing parts in aerospace and defence applications, Ti Grade 5 (Ti6Al4V) is the standard selection; where cryogenic toughness, fracture strength or medical compatibility are required, Ti Grade 5 ELI should be used.
