NICKEL ALLOYS

Nickel based alloys are the family of special materials that retain their strength at high temperature and resist aggressive environments such as acids, chlorides and seawater. They come into play under corrosion and temperature conditions where stainless steels are not sufficient, which is why they are also known as superalloys.‌‌

Each brand within the family has its own character. The Inconel alloys are nickel-chromium based and provide oxidation resistance at high temperature. The Incoloy group strikes a more economical balance with its nickel-iron-chromium composition. The Hastelloy alloys withstand reducing acids thanks to their high molybdenum content. Monel is a nickel-copper alloy and stands out in seawater and hydrofluoric acid environments.

The group also includes special purpose materials: Invar 36, with its very low coefficient of thermal expansion, is used in metrology and tooling applications; the maraging steels, with the very high strength reached through ageing, in aerospace and toolmaking; and the pure nickel grades in chemical process and electrical applications. Material is supplied with certification to the aerospace, defence, energy, petrochemical and marine sectors.‌‌

Choosing a grade. Where strength and creep resistance at high temperature are required, Inconel 718, Inconel 625 and Inconel X750 come to the fore; for oxidation resistance at continuous high temperature, Inconel 601 and Incoloy 800H are used. In processes where reducing and oxidising acids occur together, Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy C-22 and Hastelloy C-2000 are the choice; in purely reducing acid environments, Hastelloy B-3. For seawater and salt water lines, Monel 400 is suitable, and Monel K500 where strength is also required. In acidic well and gas environments, Incoloy 825 and Incoloy 925 are used, and for high temperature bolting and fasteners, Incoloy A286. Where dimensional stability is the priority, Invar 36 should be considered; where very high strength is needed, Maraging 300; and for chemical applications requiring pure nickel, Nickel 200 and Nickel 201.
