AISI 410
AISI 410 is a hardenable stainless steel with a martensitic structure containing 12% chromium. It is an excellent choice for applications seeking both mechanical strength and moderate corrosion resistance. Being hardenable by heat treatment is the most distinctive property separating it from the other stainless classes.
Generally used in knives, valve components, turbine parts and automotive components, AISI 410 stands out for its high surface hardness and wear resistance. With its good machinability, this steel is frequently preferred both in industry and in everyday products.
AISI 410 Chemical Composition
The typical chemical composition of AISI 410 is as follows:
- Chromium (Cr): 11.5 – 13.5%
- Carbon (C): 0.08 – 0.15%
- Manganese (Mn): max. 1%
- Silicon (Si): max. 1%
- Phosphorus (P) and Sulphur (S): trace amounts
- Iron (Fe): balance
Chromium gives the steel its stainless character, while carbon makes it possible to obtain high hardness by heat treatment.
AISI 410 Mechanical and Physical Properties
In the annealed and the heat-treated condition it can show the following properties:
- Tensile strength (heat treated): 650–850 MPa
- Yield strength: ~450 MPa
- Hardness (Rockwell C): HRC 35–45 (by heat treatment)
- Density: 7.75 g/cm³
- Melting point: 1480 °C
High hardness comes together with surface strength and moderate impact resistance. Because it can easily be hardened by heat treatment, it is frequently preferred for tooling and knife applications.
AISI 410 Applications
The fields of application of AISI 410 are quite wide. Some of them are:
- Pump shafts and valve components
- Knives and cutting tools
- Pressure vessels and boiler parts
- Automotive parts (shaft systems, spindles and bushings)
- Drilling equipment in the oil and gas sector
It can be used comfortably in moderately abrasive and damp environments. In salt water or acidic environments, however, different stainless classes should be preferred.
✅ Advantages of AISI 410 Stainless Steel
🔩 1. Hardenable by Heat Treatment
Unlike many other stainless steels, AISI 410 can be hardened by heat treatment up to HRC 45. That makes it ideal for cutting tools and parts requiring high wear resistance.
🧰 2. Good Machinability
Its machinability in the annealed condition is quite good. Milling and turning can be carried out comfortably with high-speed steel tips.
🧱 3. Moderate Corrosion Resistance
It offers adequate corrosion resistance in conditions such as fresh water, damp environments and mild chemical content.
⚙️ 4. Favourable Cost
It costs less than the austenitic stainless steels. That makes it an economical choice for series production and cost-sensitive projects.
⚠️ Disadvantages of AISI 410 Stainless Steel
🌊 1. Low Seawater Resistance
The risk of corrosion is high in salt water, chloride-bearing environments and acidic atmospheres. In such cases austenitic stainless steels such as 316 or 904L should be preferred.
🧱 2. Risk of Brittleness (at High Hardness)
Impact strength can fall when high hardness levels are reached. The risk of cracking and fracture must therefore be taken into account.
🔧 3. Limited Weldability
It carries a risk of embrittlement and cracking after welding. It requires special filler metal and preheating techniques.
🔁 4. It Is Magnetic
It may not be suitable for magnetic environments. This property can cause problems in some electronic and precision systems.
In conclusion, AISI 410 is a stainless steel that strikes an excellent balance between cost, machinability and hardness. The service environment must be analysed correctly, however, with particular attention to chemical resistance and welding properties.
