Both are ferritic, both are magnetic, and their chromium bands are the same. The difference is again sulphur — and again the price is paid in welding and corrosion.

Sulphur is again a MINIMUM

In AISI 430F the sulphur is added on purpose. To ASTM A582 it is 0.15 % minimum; in the EN equivalent 1.4105 it runs from 0.15 to 0.35 %. In AISI 430 sulphur is an impurity with a ceiling of 0.030 % max.

The manganese sulphide inclusions the sulphur forms break the chip and make 430F far easier to machine on automatic lathes. Carpenter Technology notes that 430F “cuts very freely in automatic screw machines”.

We deliberately publish no ratio here.

No reliable figure could be found for 430F’s machinability relative to 430. Some of the pages carrying the percentages that circulate online also print 430F’s sulphur incorrectly as a maximum. We do not publish a figure we cannot verify. What is certain is the direction: 430F machines markedly more easily than 430.

The molybdenum difference

A point most people miss: 430F is not simply “430 that machines better”. In EN 1.4105 molybdenum is mandatory (0.20–0.60 %), and on the ASTM side the phosphorus ceiling is also relaxed (0.060 % max against 0.040 % for 430). It is the most widely used name in everyday use, but on its own it is not a purchasing specification: composition and mechanical requirements are defined in the ASTM standards.

UNS — the Unified Numbering System operated jointly by ASTM and SAE (S41000 and so on). It is the number used for ordering and certification in North America, and it is more precise than the AISI name.

W.Nr / EN — the European material number (1.4006 and so on) and EN name (X12Cr13 and so on). This is the governing designation in Europe. It is usually only an approximate equivalent of the AISI grade; carbon, sulphur or molybdenum limits frequently differ.

AMS — SAE’s Aerospace Material Specifications. An AMS specification binds not only the composition but also the melting practice, the product form, the heat treatment condition and the inspection requirements. In aerospace and defence orders this is the designation that governs.

DESIGNATION

AISI 430F

AISI 430

AISI / trade name

AISI 430F

AISI 430

EN material no.
