Ti Grade 2<\/strong> is commercially pure titanium. Ti Grade 5<\/strong> is the most widely used titanium alloy in the world \u2014 Ti6Al4V<\/strong>. The difference between them is the strength gained from the aluminium and vanadium additions.<\/p>\n

Aluminium and vanadium<\/h3>\n

There are no alloying elements in the composition of Grade 2; apart from titanium it contains only limited impurities (iron, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon). Grade 5 contains 5.50\u20136.75% aluminium<\/strong> and 3.50\u20134.50% vanadium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Aluminium stabilises the alpha phase and vanadium the beta phase; the result is a two-phase (alpha + beta) structure that can be hardened by heat treatment. The figures on our datasheets show the difference clearly: the yield strength of Grade 2 is \u2265275 MPa<\/strong> against \u2265830 MPa<\/strong> for Grade 5 \u2014 three times as much. Tensile strength rises from 345 MPa to 895 MPa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The price is ductility and formability. The elongation of Grade 2 is \u226520%<\/strong> against \u226510%<\/strong> for Grade 5. Grade 2 can be cold formed and welds very easily; Grade 5 requires hot forming and controlled welding.<\/p>\n

In corrosion resistance both are excellent \u2014 pure titanium is somewhat superior in that respect. In other words the reason for choosing Grade 5 is never corrosion, always strength.<\/p>\n

Which one, and when?<\/h3>\n

Ti Grade 2 is sufficient<\/strong> \u2014 chemical plant piping and heat exchangers, seawater systems, desalination plants, anode and electrode structures, medical implant bodies, architectural cladding. Anywhere corrosion resistance is enough and strength is secondary.<\/p>\n

Ti Grade 5 is required<\/strong> \u2014 aircraft structural members, engine components, landing gear parts, hip and knee prostheses, racing car parts, high-performance fasteners. If the specification calls out AMS 4928<\/strong> or AMS 4911<\/strong>, Grade 2 is not an acceptable substitute.<\/p>\n

Neighbouring grades<\/h3>\n

For softer and harder versions of pure titanium there are Ti Grade 1<\/a> and Ti Grade 4<\/a>. For medical applications, the extra low interstitial version of Grade 5 is Ti Grade 5 ELI<\/a>.<\/p>\n
