AISI 316<\/strong> and AISI 316L<\/strong> are two versions of the same steel. Their chromium, nickel and molybdenum ranges are exactly the same. The only difference is in carbon \u2014 and the letter \u201cL\u201d says precisely that: low carbon<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Why does carbon matter?<\/h3>\n

In AISI 316 carbon is max 0.08%<\/strong>, in AISI 316L max 0.03%<\/strong>. The difference looks small, but its consequence is large.<\/p>\n

When stainless steel is welded, the zone next to the weld passes through the 450\u2013850 \u00b0C range. At that temperature carbon combines with chromium and forms chromium carbides<\/strong> at the grain boundaries. Chromium tied up in carbides can no longer protect the surface; the grain boundaries become depleted in chromium and that zone becomes open to corrosion. This is called intergranular corrosion<\/strong> (sensitisation), and it can appear as a leak months after welding.<\/p>\n

Because carbon is already very low in 316L, the amount of carbide that can form is negligible. That is why 316L is preferred for welded parts that cannot be solution annealed afterwards.<\/p>\n

The price: some strength<\/h3>\n

Carbon also contributes to strength. According to our datasheets the tensile strength of 316 is 515 MPa<\/strong> and its yield strength 205 MPa<\/strong>, while in 316L those values are 485 MPa<\/strong> and 170 MPa<\/strong>. Elongation, hardness, density and the thermal properties are identical.<\/p>\n

Which one, and when?<\/h3>\n

AISI 316 is preferred<\/strong> \u2014 parts that are not welded, or that can be solution annealed after welding: machined components, shafts, fasteners, forgings. Its strength is slightly higher.<\/p>\n

AISI 316L is required<\/strong> \u2014 welded pipes and tanks, chemical and pharmaceutical pipework, food lines, welded structures in marine environments. If the specification calls out AMS 5653<\/strong> or AMS 5507<\/strong>, the grade being asked for is 316L.<\/p>\n

In practice the two are often supplied together on the same certificate (dual-certified material); such material satisfies both the 316 and the 316L requirement.<\/p>\n
